Gerber Stuttgart – suspended light ceilings for a department store
SATTLER created large-format, suspended light ceilings using translucent stretch film for the Das Gerber department store in Stuttgart. The circular light panels were manufactured and installed in three different diameters – providing a uniform, dimmable lighting solution that creates a clear yet atmospheric effect within the space.
This bespoke solution combines precision lighting technology, custom manufacturing and professional on-site installation. From production at the SATTLER factory to installation on site, the result is a lighting system that blends seamlessly into the architecture and illuminates the space evenly.
Large-format illuminated ceilings for a calming effect
A total of eleven suspended light ceilings in various diameters were installed for the project:
- 6 × Ø 2500 mm
- 3 × Ø 3500 mm
- 2 × Ø 5000 mm
The light ceilings consist of a white, translucent stretch film and create a uniform, diffuse lighting effect. Their rounded shape creates distinct pools of light that define the space without overwhelming the architecture.
Lighting plays a key role, particularly in department stores and retail spaces: it aids wayfinding, enhances the shopping experience and showcases merchandise. The suspended light ceilings ensure uniform ambient lighting and a high-quality, understated design.
Bespoke manufacturing at the SATTLER workshop
The light ceilings were custom-made for this project and technically tailored to the on-site requirements. In addition to their large diameters, the combination of a low installation height, a uniform light surface and high-performance LED technology was a key factor.
The work was carried out using:
- white translucent stretch film
- Fire resistance class B1 in accordance with DIN 4102
- single-membrane, homogeneous structure
- integrated LED technology
- DALI dimming via on-site control
- 150 mm height
- CRI 90
- MacAdam Step 3
- L80/B10 65,000 h
Manufacturing in-house enables us to tailor such bespoke solutions precisely to the project, the space and the installation conditions.
Lighting technology and control systems
The light panels were designed to provide powerful, even illumination.
Power and luminous flux vary depending on the diameter:
| Design | Number | Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Ø 2500 mm | 6 pieces | 537 W |
| Ø 3500 mm | 3 pieces | 1053 W |
| Ø 5000 mm | 2 pieces | 2150 W |
Dimming is controlled via the on-site DALI control system. This allows the lighting to be flexibly adapted to the building’s use, the time of day and the desired atmosphere.
On-site installation by the SATTLER installation team
Alongside manufacturing and engineering, installation played a key role. The light ceilings were suspended and installed by SATTLER’s in-house installation team and precisely aligned on site. Precise installation is crucial, particularly with large-format light surfaces, to ensure that the geometry, tension of the film and lighting effect come together seamlessly.
A key advantage is that SATTLER employs its own in-house team of fitters. This ensures that expertise, accountability and coordination remain within the company – from technical planning and manufacturing right through to the final installation on site.
The installation video offers an insight into this process: from preparing the components and installing the light panels to the final alignment in the department store. It reveals what is deliberately kept out of sight in a finished light surface – the technical and craftsmanship precision behind it.
One team. One process. One responsibility.
With complex project lighting, quality doesn’t end with manufacturing. That’s why SATTLER relies on its own in-house team of fitters for installation too. Our fitters have first-hand experience of the products, the technical details and the requirements of large-scale bespoke solutions.
For architects, clients and project managers, this means: streamlined coordination processes, clear lines of responsibility and an installation team that doesn’t just fit the lighting, but understands the lighting solution as an integral part of the overall project.
The following images show details of the installation – from mounting and alignment to the installation of the translucent tensioned film. They illustrate how closely the structural design, LED technology, film technology and installation must work together to transform individual components into a large-scale, evenly illuminated surface.
