Bespoke luminaires are created wherever architecture demands individual answers. In architectural terms, this means: spaces require lighting that adapts to them – not the other way around.
At SATTLER, we develop tailored lighting solutions precisely aligned with the specific requirements of each project. From the targeted adaptation of existing luminaires to complete new developments, we create bespoke lighting solutions that bring together design, function and technology in perfect balance.
On this page, we present the different types of bespoke luminaires – and the possibilities they offer for your project.

Adaptation of standard luminaires
Many bespoke luminaires are not created through complete redevelopment, but through the targeted refinement of existing systems.
Typical adaptations include:
- adjustments to diameter, length or proportions
- custom shapes based on existing luminaire families
- adaptation to architecture or furniture (e.g. above tables or counters)
- individual suspension and mounting solutions
- bespoke colours and specific surface finishes
This form of bespoke adaptation combines design flexibility with technical efficiency.
Custom shapes and project-specific geometries
Architecture rarely follows a standard – lighting shouldn’t either.
We realise luminaires in precisely defined geometries:
- elliptical or polygonal forms
- free, organic geometries
- project-specific shapes (e.g. logos or architectural lines)
Custom shapes allow light to be used deliberately as part of the architecture – not as an addition, but as an integral design element.
Luminaires in custom sizes
Spatial dimensions and lighting effect are always closely linked.
For large-scale architecture, we realise:
- large-format ring luminaires for foyers and atria
- linear systems in bespoke lengths
- scaled luminaires for corporate headquarters, healthcare environments or public buildings
Even at exceptional dimensions, light quality, proportion and technical performance remain precisely balanced.
Special configurations and light installations
Individual luminaires are often only the starting point.
Complex lighting solutions are created through:
- multiple luminaires suspended from a single canopy
- multi-part installations across large areas
- combinations of different sizes and forms
- spatially defining light sculptures
These configurations structure spaces, create orientation and give architecture a distinct identity.

Custom surfaces and materials
The materiality of a luminaire plays a decisive role in how it is perceived within a space.
Learn more about our surface finishes.
In addition to standard finishes, we realise:
- bespoke RAL colours
- brushed, anodised or hand-polished metal surfaces
- real wood veneers
- leather applications
- special materials such as copper or gold finishes
This allows each luminaire to be precisely aligned with the material concept of the architecture.

Special mounting situations
Many bespoke solutions arise from the structural conditions of a project.
We develop bespoke solutions for:
- glass ceilings
- heating and cooling ceilings
- historic plaster ceilings
- columns or bespoke structural conditions
- complex ceiling constructions and sloped roofs
The luminaire is not integrated afterwards, but designed from the outset to suit the specific architectural situation.

Complete development of bespoke luminaires
When existing systems are not sufficient, we develop luminaires entirely from scratch.
The process includes:
- concept and design development
- technical engineering and prototyping
- production in our own manufactory
- installation and commissioning on site
This is how bespoke lighting solutions are created – from delicate individual pieces to large-scale installations.

How your bespoke luminaire is created
Every bespoke luminaire follows a clearly structured process:
- analysis of the architecture and requirements
- development of an individual lighting concept
- technical detailing and engineering
- production in our manufactory
- installation and fine-tuning on site
Through close collaboration, a solution is created that is precisely tailored to the project – both in design and technical performance.

Frequently asked questions
-
A bespoke luminaire is an individually adapted or completely newly developed lighting solution, created specifically for a project. It is used whenever standard solutions do not meet the design, technical or architectural requirements.
-
In many projects, it is sufficient to adapt an existing luminaire – for example in terms of size, form, surface finish or suspension. This allows a tailored solution without the need for a complete new development.
-
A new development becomes necessary when specific requirements in design, function or integration cannot be achieved with existing systems. This is often the case in complex architectural contexts, challenging mounting situations or unique design concepts.
-
Yes, luminaires can be realised in almost any dimension – from minor adjustments to large-scale installations for foyers, atria or public buildings.
-
In addition to standard finishes, bespoke solutions include RAL colours, brushed or polished metals, real wood veneers, leather applications, as well as special materials such as copper or gold finishes.
-
Yes, bespoke luminaires are developed specifically for each mounting situation. This includes glass ceilings, heating and cooling ceilings, historic structures or configurations involving columns.
-
Yes, in addition to one-off pieces, bespoke luminaires can also be produced as small or large series – for example for office buildings, hotels or multi-site projects.
-
A project begins with the analysis of the architecture and requirements. Based on this, an individual concept is developed, technically detailed and manufactured in our own facility. Installation and final fine-tuning are then carried out on site.
