The history of the building: a former village church becomes a Jewish museum
Judaism and Christianity coexist peacefully under one roof
"The museum, which reopened in January 2019, presents a completely revamped exhibition on the history of the Jewish community in Jebenhausen and Göppingen. The exhibition concept was developed by the Archives and Museums team of the City of Göppingen. The design was carried out by Ranger Design Stuttgart. The museum opened in 1992. It was established on the initiative of the city and is publicly funded.
The museum building, the former village church of Jebenhausen, is over 500 years old. It was abandoned by the Protestant parish in 1966. The historic building itself is a striking testament to the mutual relations between Jews and Christians. For instance, following the synagogue’s closure in 1899, its gilded ceiling chandeliers and pews were repurposed in the church: they were a gift from the Jews to the Christians. Furthermore, the local lordship of Liebenstein is represented in the church through coats of arms and epitaphs. In 1777, the noble family gave a promise of protection to Jewish families interested in moving to the area."
Eyewitnesses to History
"In the 19th century, Jebenhausen (a district of Göppingen since 1939) was home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Württemberg. The exhibition explores the history of the Jewish people in Jebenhausen and Göppingen. This history began in 1777 with the issuance of a letter of protection for Jewish families by the local rulers, the Lords of Liebenstein.
The Jewish Museum in Göppingen opened in 1992. Since 2019, the history of the Jews in Jebenhausen and Göppingen has been presented in a new way across eight thematic areas."
Various exhibits. Images and displays: presented freely and openly or in glass cases. Reflections on the materials. Variations in the brightness of the information panels. The impact of the building combined with the dark wooden furniture. Multiple spatial levels, guiding visitors’ line of sight. Flexibility in redesigning the exhibition. All these factors must be taken into account when selecting the appropriate lighting.

How choosing the right lighting can transform the overall look

Consistent visual identity & lighting concept
The AVVENI series features round, flat downlights that can be adjusted to any angle and are mounted on a surface-mounted track, allowing them to illuminate objects both near and far.
Brightening up the museum’s dark wooden surroundings. Black information panels and architectural features such as an old chandelier or paintings on the wooden balcony are simultaneously bathed in pleasant light by the flexibly adjustable AVVENI lighting heads.
A consistent lighting concept. AVVENI light heads are also used with a track system for the bright information panels and the light-coloured tiled/stone flooring.
Using track systems in exhibition areas offers a great deal of flexibility, particularly for temporary exhibitions or when highlighting different thematic areas at different times.
No major re-installations are required when changes are made. Simply reposition and align the light head on the track rail.
Introducing a change of theme with a different lighting atmosphere
Equality in Diversity
Another exhibition area featuring numerous display cases with internal lighting. The slightly different atmosphere and thematic focus of the exhibition are enhanced by a change in the type of lighting, from track-mounted luminaires to semi-recessed luminaires. Here, too, the choice fell on the movable round luminaire heads of the AVVENI, the AVVENI PURE CEILING, in elegant polished aluminium.
